The 8-Step Packing Method

The list is only half of it. How you pack is what makes the difference between a chaotic bag and one you can navigate blindfolded at midnight in a hostel.

List before you pack

Go through this checklist, check off what applies to your trip. Don’t pack anything that isn’t on your list. This prevents the “just in case” spiral that adds 5kg to your bag.

2

JAN

Lay everything out flat first

Spread every single item on your bed before any of it touches your bag. This gives you a visual inventory and always reveals at least 3 things you don’t actually need.

3

JAN

Put half the clothes back

Whatever your clothing pile looks like — cut it in half. You will not wear all of it. Neutral, mix-and-match pieces in a carry-on beat a full wardrobe in a checked bag every time.

4

JAN

Roll, don't fold — and use packing cubes

Rolling saves 30% space. Packing cubes save your sanity at 2am when you need to find one specific item. Underwear and socks go inside your shoes — never wasted space.

5

JAN

Heavy items on the wheel side

Shoes and electronics go near the wheels of your suitcase. For backpacks, heaviest items go closest to your back at the top. This affects how natural the bag feels to carry for hours.

6

JAN

Put daily essentials on top

Charger, sleep mask, change of clothes, travel documents — accessible without excavating the bag. You’ll need these at airports, train stations, and the minute you arrive at accommodation.

7

JAN

Weigh it before you leave

Airlines charge $30–80 for overweight bags. A luggage scale costs $10 and saves you every trip. Know your airline’s limits for both carry-on size and checked weight before you get to the airport.

JAN

Wear your heaviest items on travel days

Boots, jeans, and your bulkiest jacket on your body instead of in your bag frees up more space than any packing technique. It’s uncomfortable for about 30 minutes. It’s worth it.
